artist's notes:
These recent paintings have been inspired mainly by my reading of J.M. Coetzee over the last 4-5 years - I found human forms started to have faces (after the 'Talking to Sickert' series of paintings 2005 and then coming out of the 'Several Masterpieces' paintings from 2006) - actual human beings began to appear in the studio . . . they could see, speak and hear.
When I entered the studio these "people" would be there . . . and as each new painting came into being I would find they were most often of somebody I know or somebody I knew, or a mixture of people. Their presence and spirit moves me still.
This work is against illustration or representational painting . . . these paintings for me are living things unto themselves.
Their inner workings unknowable but felt . . . sensed by the viewer.Figure with folded arms. 1370x1120, April, 2007

After seeing a badly downloaded copy of Edward Norton in the film 'The Illusionist' . . . to evoke some sort of 'portrait' from such 19th century stage magic.Study for Head of Woman. 760x660, 13/11/06
